It was interesting this week to hear an exchange between Dr. Kelsey and Irving Wladawsky-Berger regarding AI an the future of work. Irving has a more positive outlook than what I was anticipating, citing that very few jobs can be fully automated. It seems like a common theme continues to surface throughout Surfing the Tsunami and this class. AI is a massively transformative technology that will alter the human landscape in the very near future. It seems to me that it will drive an even bigger wedge between the "haves" and the "have nots."
I think it also has the potential to underscore the current divisive political climate. When it comes time for leadership to make decisions about saving money with increased automation and saving jobs and maintaining the human component, it will be interesting to see where the chips fall. Especially in a publicly traded company- are shareholders going to be more concerned with the financial holdings, or keeping more of the population employed? I have a suspicion about which it will be.
I now circle back to thinking about how to get ahead of this revolution. With my limited experience and knowledge about AI, it seems that the most important jumping off point is understanding what parts of my job can and cannot be automated. Meanwhile, my mind continues to drift toward my daughter and setting her up for success. I think it is time to start working on finding out where her interests are and how we can help her fine tune those to align herself on the employed side of the future.
