This week we were charged to dig deeper into AI and to set ourselves up for ongoing excavation to adapt. It makes sense that our text instructed us to do this, but it's already organically happening in my case. Not in such a structured way as a calendar reminder, but it is inserting itself into parts of the routine. When I peruse Apple News, I find myself clicking on AI-related stories to see what they have to say.
Just today, I read an article about The New York Times. They are publishing what they are calling "enhanced bios" of their reporters to establish trust and underscore the paper's human-led reporting. Along with the bios, the paper is starting to describe how stories are obtained (live and on the scene) and demystifying the newsroom. It's all about transparency and maintaining credibility with readers as AI becomes an increasing threat to the integrity of the company. You can read the article here.
Even if I did not want to adapt, it is becoming increasingly obvious that I am going to have to. I don't know if it's a new lens I've taken because of the content in this class, or whether it would be smacking me in the face regardless. I was in a meeting this week where various departments discussed using AI to improve efficiency and manage the increasing demand for manpower. That night, I went home to find my husband watching Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime with Prime Vision. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Not only does it show player routes in real-time, but it generates defensive statistics that become increasingly accurate as more plays unfold. This stuff is truly everywhere.
Finally, I remain dedicated to having AI help me "parent" more easily and generally introduce it to our family life as a norm. I asked ChatGPT to help me come up with new meal ideas for my picky eater. I let it know what she likes and general guidelines (cooking time, texture, things to avoid) and it generated about a dozen different ideas. Nothing was life-altering, but a waffle and sausage sandwich was a pretty solid suggestion. I think if I keep playing with it, we may be on to something. It is reassuring to have another source to go to for ideas that doesn't involve scouring the web for hours. AI for the win!
